We found outgoing SMTP to be unusable for our clients with the scanning of outgoing messages enabled as most messages were getting flagged as spam because clients don't have static IP's and things like that. We don't want to disable those DNSBL's because they do a good job of blocking spam from third party hosts, but we also want to allow clients to send out e-mail without being constantly flagged as spam. The only way we can offer SMTP to our clients without frustrating them to bits is the submission scan exception.

In the case of large mailing lists if you detect that a user has submitted a large amount of messages in a short time period you can scan the first couple to make sure they are all basically the same thing (with out custom info like usernames, etc which will be different) by looking for a pattern and if the first email is good then you automaticlaly accept the rest if they match that same pattern as you know its not spam.

If you want to build this functionality, be my guest, but that doesn't sound too easy.

Anyway, mailinglists are only part of the problems we have with outgoing e-mail if qmail-scanner is scanning all outgoing e-mail, even for authenticated users. I have been looking for a way disable scanning for outgoing e-mail for two years and was very happy to finally find a way to do it.

I may have mentioned that in another post but wedo that already in a custom built smtp sink in IIS that also integrates into comtouch and rate limits - we also dont use rbls/sorbs as they are just thugs and extortionists but wedont do any ip verification on outbound mail only inbound
