The latest ASL kernel wouldnt have any effect on SSH, so to answer your question the latest ASL kernel will work just fine with cpanel.
It sounds like you just can't SSH in, is that correct?. Can you connect to any other services? If you can, then you you can rule out ASL blocking you - if ASL blocks you you wont be able to connect to any server. So first, can you tell us if you are only unable to ssh in, or are all services blocked?
Also, whats the output of this command (assuming you can log in):
ps auxwww | grep sshd
Also, what are your firewall rules?
Is your IP address blocked, or was it added to tcpwrappers (either by ASL or some other non-ASL tool, like fail2ban, etc.)
ASL will log anything it does, if it shuns an IP address you can see that in the Blocked list. Do you see your IP in the blocked list?
Has ASL sent you any email alerts regarding ssh or services being down?
